The municipal brigades in Estepona have placed nest boxes for bats and autillos (birds of prey) in the public parks of ‘Los Abuelos’ and Seghers, following a request from the Sierra Bermeja Naturalist Group ‘Grunsber’. These shelters aim to provide urban habitats for these vulnerable species that are beneficial as insect predators. ‘Grunsber’ highlights the importance of protecting bat species, which are safeguarded by state and community laws, with some facing extinction threats. The European scops owl, a vulnerable nocturnal bird of prey, is also benefiting from this initiative, as it helps control insect populations. The installation of these nest boxes is seen as crucial by ‘Grunsber’ to prevent the spread of dangerous exotic species like the tiger mosquito. Both bats and autillos readily accept artificial shelters, making it essential to support their presence in urban environments. These species play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling insect pests, which could otherwise pose risks to human communities.
