The Estepona City Council has unveiled a new edition of its supported swimming program designed for individuals with limited mobility and disabilities who are beneficiaries of the Home Help Service offered by the municipal Social Services department. The main objective of this project is to provide an opportunity for those who are unable to access the beach independently or encounter significant obstacles in doing so to enjoy a relaxing day by the sea, which can have positive effects on their health and overall well-being. This initiative is part of the Social Interaction, Recreation, and Leisure Activities program under the Community Social Services. The sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a capacity of 16 participants per week (8 on each day). Participants are picked up from their homes at 10:00 a.m. in an accessible vehicle and spend from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. swimming at El Cristo Beach, a fully accessible area with designated parking for individuals with disabilities, as well as changing facilities and showers. Following the session, participants are safely transported back to their homes, arriving before 2:00 p.m. Throughout the activity, two caregivers from the Home Care Service provided by OHLA INGESAN offer continuous assistance to the participants. Moreover, the program provides access to two amphibious wheelchairs, an adapted sun lounger, a walking aid, and a set of specialized crutches for navigating the sandy terrain. Additional equipment can be arranged upon request to meet the specific needs of the participants. It is worth mentioning that aside from this tailored program for individuals requiring home care support, the City Council also offers a daily supported swimming service at La Rada and El Cristo beaches until September 15, operating from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This service is managed by social and healthcare professionals and includes a range of adapted equipment such as amphibious chairs, specialized sun loungers, beach walkers, and amphibious crutches.
